ChatGPT to show ads for free and Go users in the US

In an official blog post, OpenAI announced that it has begun testing ads in ChatGPT for free and Go users in the US. The ads will be shown only to logged-in adult users, while users under the age of 18 will not see them.

ChatGPT users with Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education subscriptions will not see any ads. OpenAI also confirmed that the ads will not influence the answers in a chat.

Free ChatGPT users can also choose to disable ads, but doing so will come with a reduced free message limit. Ads shown in a chat will also be labelled as ‘Sponsored’ and shown separately from an answer.

The ads will be based on past conversations, current chat topics, and previous ad interactions. Advertisers will only receive data related to how users interact with ads. OpenAI also states that it will not share chat histories, memories, or any personal user information with advertisers.

Ads will also not be shown in chats that revolve around health, mental health, and politics. Additionally, users will have control over the ads they see in ChatGPT, with options to dismiss specific ads, provide feedback, understand why an ad is being shown, delete ad data, and personalize their ad preferences.
