Last month, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said “we are releasing GPT-5 soon,” and on Sunday, Altman teased the GPT-5 by posting a screenshot on X that had “ChatGPT 5” written in the top-left corner. A recent tweet from OpenAI’s official X account suggests the model will be launched later today at 5 PM UTC, but thanks to GitHub, you don’t have to wait that long to know more about GPT-5.

GitHub, in a now-deleted blog post, mistakenly revealed some details about the GPT-5. The post stated that GPT-5 offers “major improvements in reasoning, code quality, and user experience.” It also “handles complex coding tasks with minimal prompting, provides clear explanations, and introduces enhanced agentic capabilities, making it a powerful coding collaborator and intelligent assistant for all users.”
Additionally, GitHub revealed that GPT-5 will have four variants – gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, gpt-5-nano, and gpt-5-chat. gpt-5 is designed for logic and multi-step tasks while gpt-5-mini is a lightweight version for cost-sensitive applications.
gpt-5-nano is optimized for speed and is ideal for applications that require low latency, whereas gpt-5-chat is designed for advanced, multi-modal, natural, and context-aware conversations for enterprise applications.
If OpenAI announces GPT-5 today, it will be their second announcement of the week since the company introduced gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b open-weight reasoning models a couple of days ago.
